John Warwick Daniel letter to John Letcher [manuscript], 1862 September 29.

Daniel, a 1st Lieutenant in the 11th Regiment Virginia Volunteers requests a letter of recommendation from Letcher, reminding him that he had been recommended for promotion after the battle of Mannassas by General John Echols but had been too young to accept the appointment. He is now seeking promotion after being wounded at Antietam and encloses a letter of recommendation from Lt. Col. Langhorne (not present)

Governor John Letcher was born on March 29, 1813, in Lexington, Va. Letcher graduated from Randolph Macon in 1833, where he studied law. He participated in the State Constitutional Convention of 1850 and was elected to Congress as a Democrat in 1852. Letcher served in Congress until 1859 when he was elected governor of Virginia.
